Politics page:
Every sport has its Politics, but nearly any current politics going
on in Munster can be traced back to Cheating detected in 2013.
Report by John Alfred
Chess Hero: Gabriel Mirza
There are three known incidents of cheating ...
1). Cork Congress: While playing his game in one of the
rounds at Cork Congress in 2013, Gabriel noticed his opponent
was getting up after each move and disappearing. After some
searching, he discovered the player had been going in to a toilet
cubicle where the game in progress was being analysed on a
powerful hand-held computing device.
A chess Arbiter later told me that they had been getting reports
of suspicious behaviour going back two years at several events.
They would discreetly follow the suspicious player/s to a toilet,
but once the suspect was inside the cubicle they would do no
more.
Gabriel had just exposed what had been going on for 2 years.
Players had been unknowingly playing against a computer.
2). Cork Congress: At a different game in the same
tournament, another player later that evening recalled
suspicious behaviour by his opponent. The player made his
move, his opponent looked at the game for a short while, got
up and went away for c10 minutes. He eventually came back
and ONLY THEN made his move. The school of the opponent
was written to by registered letter describing the incident. A
reply was never received.
3). Irish Junior Chess Championships 2013, behaviour was
observed where a player was behaving similarly as in Cork. It
wasn't understood at the time, but after the incident at Cork
Congress it fell into place.
Chess cheating of this nature has been rearing its head in many
countries, and Gabriel's exposure of it happening in Ireland, has
led to wide awareness of what's possible and more important,
how to mitigate against it. Irish chess players can now sit down
to a game and not worry that they are playing a chess machine
instead of a human player.
Well done Gabriel. Ireland owes you.
